Vertigo – an abstract of a leaf

Vertigo - an abstract of a leaf ©Daniel Sroka

This leaf is a tiny one, and rather unassuming. But when I picked it up and turned it over, I was surprised to find a tiny perfect spiral hiding within it. I’ve been working with this leaf for about a week, trying to express this sense of surprise and motion. This photograph is close, but not quite there yet. More work is needed.

Every fall, I collect leaves to work with throughout the year. Some years are more difficult, requiring I go on long “leaf hunts” to find interesting specimen, But so far, this year has given me a great selection of leaves, right outside my home. I have found nearly everything walking my kids to and from their bus stop. I think the intense July, followed by a wet August has played havoc on the trees, causing the leaves to grow in all sorts of interesting ways.
