Jackson’s first digital drawing

Jackson, who’s 20 months old, often visits me in my studio during the day. Usually it is to play with my spinning chairs, or crawl under the shooting table. Lately, he’s loved sitting on my lap and playing with the various pens and pencils I have. Today I had my Wacom tablet out, and he grabbed the tablet’s pen, so I opened a new file in Photoshop, and showed him how it worked. Within seconds, he figured out that drawing on the tablet made “marks” on the screen. This is what he made:

What I found interesting was how his drawing style related to my previous post on “finished” vs “complete”. I expected him to just keep drawing until he got bored, just like he does when he plays with his cars. And true to form, he went at his drawing with gusto. Until one point when he suddenly stopped and just looked at it. After a couple carefully-considered seconds, he made two more quick marks, put the pen down and scooted off my lap. It was now “complete”. Wow… I wish I was that confidence.
